What age should my child first visit the dentist?

Typically your child should be seen be age 2-3. At our office we refer to the first appointment for children as a “happy visit”. This visit will establish a dental home for your child. Early examination and preventive care will protect your child’s smile now and in the future.

What kind of toothbrush should I use?

Adults are recommended to choose a small to medium size brush with soft bristles. The head should be small enough to reach into all parts of the mouth: especially the back of the mouth where it can be difficult to reach.

Children need to use smaller brushes with soft bristles.

People with sensitive teeth can use softer bristled brushes that are gentle on teeth while also providing effective cleaning.

What kind of toothpaste should I use?

Our office personally uses and proudly recommends Oxyfresh products available at our office.

How often should I brush and floss?

When it comes to toothbrushing, you should remember that the best way is to brush your teeth at least twice a day, specifically before going to bed at night. How to brush correctly? From the first sight this question seems to be easy as we do it everyday, but did you know that it’s correct to brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums? Such small things will help you keep your teeth healthy and white. Brush them gently using a small, circular motion; use the tip of the brush head to clean the inside front teeth. And don’t forget to brush your tongue in order to your breath fresh and to remove harmful bacteria.

At the same time daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gumline. As in addition it disrupts plaque colonies from building up, which prevents the gums, teeth, and bone from a possible damage.

How often do I need to go to the dentist?

On average, seeing a dentist twice a year works well for most people. Others may need more frequent visits. People with a high risk of dental disease might need to visit every three or four months, or more. This high-risk group includes:

  • Smokers
  • Diabetics
  • People with current gum disease
  • People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection
  • People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque

How do i know if my child should see an orthodontist?

It is usually difficult for you to determine if treatment is necessary, because there are many problems that can occur even though the front teeth look straight. Conversely, there are some problems that look intimidating and complex, but will resolve on their own. Asking your general dentist is good reference. Our office works with great Orthodontists in the area.
